REF: 293.031- Bulova Lone Eagle with box c.1927

DESCRIPTION:
A genuinely rare Bulova 'Lone Eagle' dating from 1927 made to commerate Charles A Lindbergh, aviation pioneer and pilot of Spirit of St Louis which successfully crossed the atlantic in 1927. Lindbergh's nickname was 'Lone Eagle'.

This particular watch is believed to be one of the original batch of 5000 watches issued to commemorate his historic flight.

The Bulova history book writes that once the original 5000 sold out in just three days (22 May 1927 - 24 May 1927) they went on to sell more of this corner-cut design throughout the remainder of 1927 and into 1928. However later corner-cut editions (post 5000) changed the dial and hands to use a closed 9 instead of an open 9 and cathedral hands instead of the spade style hands. The cathederal hands became a common feature in most 1928/29 and 30's Bulova mens watches.

The case is 14K gold filled and features a distinctive corner cut design with enamel inlay. It hinges open twice, once to reveal the dial, then again to reveal the movement. Inside the case back is stamped Bulova American standard, 14K gold filled pat. Jun 10 1924, serial no. 559656. The rear of the watch has the initials EW neatly inscribed. The case is in general excellent condition with both hinges sound, but there is some wear through of the metal where the W has been inscribed. The enamelled panels are in excellent order.

The dial is original with features idenifying it as one of the early release models such as the open '9' and the spade design minute hand rather than cathedral hands. This watch also comes with an original circa 1928 Lone Eagle box. We believe this box to be of 1928 vintage (tonneau release model) rather than 1927 but given the rarity of the 'Lone Eagle' box a valuable asset to the watch. The box itself is in good condition but has been repaired with a different base to hold the watch. The movement is calibre 10AP 17J manal wind which has just been serviced by our watchmaker (April 2010). A very interesting and collectable piece, unsuitable for daily wear due to the rarity and delicate nature of a watch of this vintage. It does however run superbly and keep excellent time, and should be enjoyed for a special occasion.
